City/Town Banner

City and town governments are the level of government people interact with most often, even if they do not always call them that. These offices shape the feel and function of daily life, from local roads and zoning to police and fire services and public spaces. City councils, mayors, and town managers make decisions that affect neighborhoods block by block. Understanding how city and town government works helps explain why certain choices are made locally and how authority differs at the county, state, and federal levels.

Each local office has a specific role within that system. Learning who does what, how leaders are selected, and how decisions move from discussion to action makes local government easier to follow and less opaque. Exploring individual offices shows how policies are shaped close to home and how residents can engage with officials who live and work in the same communities they serve. That clarity reflects the broader civic education work of Arizona’s Citizens Clean Elections Commission, helping voters see how local decisions connect directly to participation, accountability, and everyday outcomes.
