Primary Ballot Process

Arizona’s next primary election will be held on July 30, 2024. The purpose of a primary election is to nominate partisan candidates within their respective party for advancement to the general election.

For example, three Republican candidates may be seeking nomination for the office of state senator, which is only one seat. Republican voters would receive a Republican ballot that lists all three of the Republican candidates. The single candidate that receives the most votes would advance to the general election.

Republican Primary Ballot => Republican Voter

Vote for not more than 1:
  • Republican Candidate A
  • Republican Candidate B
  • Republican Candidate C

Democratic Primary Ballot => Democratic Voter

Vote for not more than 1:
  • Democratic Candidate Y
  • Democratic Candidate Z

In this scenario, Republican Candidate A and Democratic Candidate Z receive the most votes in the primary election and advance to the general election (see below).

Therefore, ballots are created by party type. Arizona has 5 recognized parties: Democratic, Green, Libertarian, No Labels, and Republican. This means there are 5 different party ballots (subsequently broken up into ballot styles based on districts).

Any voter that is not registered with one of these 5 parties is considered unaffiliated/independent.

Democratic Party = Democratic Party Ballot
Green Party = Green Party Ballot
Libertarian Party= Libertarian Party Ballot
Republican Party = Republican Party Ballot
No Labels Party = No Labels Party Ballot (see below for important information)
Independent Voter (No Party Affiliation) Select one = Choose One: Democratic, Republican, or local non-partisan (if available)

Note: The No Labels (NOL) Party Ballot will NOT have any federal, state, or legislative office candidates listed on it. This is due to a preliminary injunction issued by the U.S. District Court for Arizona barring NOL candidates from appearing on the Arizona Primary Election ballot. No Labels Party of Arizona v Adrian Fontes, CV-23-02172-PHX-JJT (2024). No Label Party voters who are on the Active Early Voting List will automatically be sent a No Labels Party Ballot with no candidates listed, unless they contact their County Recorder to determine if a local non-partisan ballot is available or they change their political affiliation on their voter registration before the deadline.

What Happens After the Primary Election?

On the general election ballot, all voters receive a ballot that lists the party nominees from all of the 5 parties and they can vote for their preferred candidate. The candidate that receives the most votes in the general election is then elected into office.

General Election Ballot = Republican and Democratic Voters Vote for not more than 1:
  • Republican Candidate A
  • Democratic Candidate Z
  • Any other party candidates and independent candidates

The candidate that receives the most votes is elected into office. In the general election, voters can vote across party lines.
